Paintings by Douglas W. Trowbridge: Education: Degree in Commercial Art and Graphic Design from: Art Instruction School, Minneapolis, Minnesota Membership: Accepted to membership of the Kansas Watercolor Society in 1971, and Watercolor West in 1981. Honors: 1st Place-Professional Watercolor - Kansas State Fair - 1972. Patron Purchase Award from Midwestern Print Makers Association in 1973. Permanent Collection Purchase Award from San Bernardino Art Association in 1979. 1st Place at Watercolor West International Watercolor Exhibit - Riverside, Calif. 1981. 50 Regional and 4 International Awards for Graphic Design from the Society of Technical Publications 1984-1997. Received Special Award at Kansas State Fair in 2003. Received 1st Place, a Special Purchase Award for Permanent Collection at C.A.S.A., and 3 Purchase Awards in the Hutchinson, Kansas Art Fair in 2006. Won Best of Show and a Purchase Award at the Arkansas City Prairie Festival and Best of Show Watercolor purchased for the Arkansas City Art Council's Permanent Collection - 2006.

About the painting.

This painting was done last spring (2007) shortly after returning from conducting a painting workshop for the Prairie Winds Writers and Painters workshop held at the 4-H Center at Rock Springs, Kansas. The camp is located in the beautiful flint hills region of the state. The painting was based on sketches and photos taken at Rock Springs and completed in my studio in May.

About "Johnny B. Goode"

The model for this painting is my son, Matt. (He is not cheap, but, reasonable.) I wanted to do a painting of a blues guitarist, so I took several photos of Matt in different poses and attitudes with his guitar and wearing one of the many hats from his mothers hat collection. After completing the painting and viewing it for a short time I couldn't help but think of the legendary Jonny B. Goode from the song by Chuck Berry. Hence the title...

About "At the Art Fair"

While visiting the 2005, Hutchinson, Kansas Art Fair, I was struck by this scene of a young artist sitting outside her display . Intently sketching while the warm springtime sun casscaded over her shoulders created a striking high contrast image aginst the darker interior of her tent.
